Principal's Message
May 25, 2010
As you have probably heard or read in the news, Jordan School District has had to make cuts in staff in the Special Education Program for Jordan School District. I just wanted to let you know what it means for South Valley School.
In our program for the full time students, we are losing 2.5 certified teachers, 15 full time instructional assistants, and 6 part time instructional assistants. There are also cuts in our part time program, as well. This translates into approximately 40% of the staff.
This means that South Valley will have to re-structure the way that services are provided to our students to ensure that each receives what is required by law. Students will still receive services that are required by IDEIA. Please realize that it may not be delivered in the same way that it has in the past.
We at South Valley are determined to NOT take any steps backwards in the education of our students. South Valley has always been at the forefront in teaching transition skills. This will require an even closer relationship to our students' parents and caregivers in order to guide these young people into positive adult lives.
Please be cautious of rumors. If you have any specific questions or concerns about your student's IEP, transportation, or services, please contact your student's teacher or feel free to call me. As we re-group, we will do our best to keep you informed of our ideas and our needs.
Thank you for your continued support.

According to the theory of aerodynamics, as may be readily demonstrated through wind tunnel experiments, the bumblebee is unable to fly. This is because the size, weight, and shape of its body-in relation to total wingspan-make flying impossible. But, the bumblebee, ignorant of these scientific truths, goes ahead and flies anyway.
Everyone of us has been faced with a life full of things we have been told we CAN’T do. South Valley is a school that helps each of understand that we CAN do the things we need to do, in spite of our limitations. There is a full and wonderful year ahead of us, and I truly believe that we CAN do all of the things that are ahead.
Have a great year.
