Public Housing:
Housing that is owned and operated by the Housing Authority.
It is not a voucher or a certificate that moves with the person. It is connected to the property.
The housing Authority staff does all maintenance and management.
A lease is signed with the Housing Authority.

Section 8/Housing Choice Voucher Program:
A housing voucher that is given to the individual.
It is connected to the person, not the property.
The holder of the voucher finds their own living situation, signs a lease with the landlord and an agreement with the Housing Authority.
The property owner or property manager hired by the owner does maintenance and management.

Moderate Rehabilitation Program / Mod. Rehab:
Apartments located in Salt Lake City and operated by the Salt Lake City Housing Authority.
The apartments are owned and operated by a private landlord but the voucher given is connected to the property, not to the individual.
Sometimes the waiting list is less cumbersome because most people want vouchers that move with them.
It can be an especially good solution in a crisis situation.

Supportive Housing for the Elderly and Persons with Disabilities/ Project Based:
Housing assistance that is connected to a particular property, often the housing comes with attached benefits such as minimal case management, community reflective groups, educational opportunities and health related activities.

Shared Housing:
Salt Lake City=Shared Voucher
Salt Lake County=Individual Voucher
*Rooms/Size
*Inspections
*Income Based
*Rent Calculations
*Paperwork
*Benefits

Points to remember when working with Housing Authority:
* Waiting list information must be updated when changes of address are made.

* It is critical to have a permanent mailing address on the application, even if it differs from the physical address.

* Housing Authorities offer an orientation class when a person is coming off of the waiting list and accepting a voucher.

* If for some reason housing is accepted in a program that was not the individuals first choice, the person can remain on the waiting list of other programs to pursue other options. However, a new application must be completed and submitted. While you are in your current living situation you will be on the waiting list of your choice.

* When housing information arrives, or requests are made for updated information from the Housing Authority it is necessary to respond by the date requested. No response will cause a person to be deleted from the waiting list.

* It is a good idea to call every 4 to 6 months to ask about waiting list status.

* When housing assistance is being accessed it is important to remember the Housing Authority in the equation. The lease is either with the Housing Authority and a landlord, or with the Housing Authority. Notification of any changes in a living situation (income, moves, needs, problems) must be given to the Housing Authority in writing within the specified number of days.

Moves:
When a move is necessary please notify all entities involved and work through the process until it is completed. There are many issues to be resolved and steps to take when people and programs are being changed.

"When you see someone putting on his big boots, you can be sure that an adventure is going to happen." Winnie the Pooh

Home Choice:
The program offers the option of home ownership for people with disabilities and/or their families.
It is an opportunity to acquire a home loan with a portion of the loan funded by dollars set aside in the Olene Walker Housing Loan Fund.
The funds are accessed through the Home Choice Program.

ASSIST, Inc.:
An independent non-profit community Design Center that was founded in 1969 by the Graduate School of Architecture at the University of Utah and the Utah Society of the American Institute of Architects.
ASSIST provides architectural design, community planning and development assistance to non-profit and community groups, and housing and accessibility design assistance to low-income households or persons with disabilities.

State Energy Assistance and Lifeline Program (SEAL):
The program offers home energy assistance for low-income individuals and families.
The funds are also utilized for families in crisis situations as well as for homeowners in need of Weatherization services.
