Martin Luther King said, "The time is always right to do what is right." AT OHMS we have so many students, parents, and teachers doing the right thing! We hear so often of teenagers making poor choices, however, I believe most of our students make the right choice most of the time and I would like to recognize them for their goodness. In the last few weeks I have had heart warming conversations with students and teachers in which stories were told to me about doing the right thing,
I would like to share a few…
My secretary came to me and told me that a student had just found $60 in the hall and turned it in, no questions asked. Minutes later, a distraught mom came into the office looking for the money, which she was planning on using that day to go buy something for her son. The honest student who turned the money in left so quickly that it took us a while to find her, and when we did, she couldn't believe we were making a big deal about it, because it was just the right thing to do.
Another heartwarming story is really a combination of many stories that I heard after our school-wide character education lesson on honesty. We had several students admit or confess that they had not been entirely honest in their academics and went to their teachers to "make it right" despite the penalties they potentially faced. Emotions come easy as I have thought about the courage it must have taken to do the right thing and be honest. My respect for these students has grown immensely and I am proud of them and their teachers for working together to take the corrective steps needed.
My last example comes from our cafeteria--yes, good things can happen in a school lunchroom! :) A special needs student accidentally dropped their lunch tray and spilled their uneaten food on the floor. Another student who did not know the embarrassed student hurried to help him pick up the food and make him feel better. After he helped him, he walked him over to the lunch line and offered to pay for his new lunch. After we assured him we would take care of the spilled lunch, he went on his own over to the ice cream counter and bought an ice cream treat for his new friend. Again, he did not think much of what he had done.
These are only a few of many good deeds done by good students here at Oquirrh Hills and it makes me proud to be part of the school and this community and to affiliate with so many wonderful young people. They have been taught well and a vast majority of them have learned that wrong is wrong even if everyone is doing it and right is right even if no one is doing it.
