I Can Read
Because of the fact that not all children learn in the same manner, or at the same rate, there are always those who are unable to read at their grade level. Reading affects all areas of education, so those who are struggling with reading are at a terrible disadvantage.
The I Can Read Program is a reading tutoring program in which volunteer tutors work one-on-one with the same students throughout the school year. These tutors generously give of their time so that these readers can have some extra reading practice. Typically tutors meet with the same students in 30-minute sessions two days a week. Tutors receive training and are assisted by the I Can Read Coordinator and/or the school's Literacy Facilitator. The tutor uses a structured lesson plan for each session.
A typical session includes rereading a familiar book, choral read with tutor, read new book while tutor records errors, then from those errors chooses what word work to do during that session. Student takes books home after each session to read (instructional level). Parents initial the reading chart each time the child reads at home.
If you are interested in becoming a reading tutor and have two free 30-minute time slots each week to work with a child, we would love for your to join our tutoring team. Contact Kathy Clay (I Can Read Coordinator), and she will arrange a time with you for a training session.
